Despite the amount of new housing in Southwest Florida, more and more pets are finding themselves out of a home. The following is a list of places in Southwest Florida where you can find an animal to take home with you. Fees and adoption agreements vary greatly, and most require a pre-adoption interview to make sure the new owner is financially and emotionally able to provide space and proper medical care. Prospective owners must also agree to have new pets spayed or neutered if it hasn’t already been done.

Collier County

Lee County

Lee County Humane Society: 2010 Arcadia St., Fort Myers. 332-0364. Offers dogs, cats and occasionally rabbits, hamsters and other small pets.

Greyhound Adoption Kennels: 11551 Deal Road, N. Fort Myers. 731-3187. Offers former racing greyhounds.

Second Chance for Greyhounds: 10826 Dean St., Bonita Springs. 947-2365. Offers former racing greyhounds.

Luv-A-Pet: 2015 W. First St., Fort Myers. 332-3200. Arranges adoptions of dogs and cats.

PAWS: 472-1027. Adopts cats.
