The Florida Department of Motor Vehicles is located at 4532 U.S. 41 E., Naples. The phone number is 941-434-5002.

Applicants should bring a current driver license, or, if you don’t have one, bring one form of certified identification and another form of identification. You must be at least age 16 to get an operator’s license, but 15-year-olds can receive a restricted license, letting them drive as long as there is another licensed driver, at least age 18, along with them.

State law now requires that those under age 18 provide compulsory school attendance records in order to receive a driver license. Records are available from school principals or the school board.

Also, new drivers must have attended a substance familiarization course in order to obtain a license. The course is offered by the Southwest Florida Safety Council, with offices in Collier and Lee counties.

Out-of-state drivers seeking a Florida driver license must take rule, road and vision tests.

Licenses are good for six years, and appointments for renewals can be made by calling the office. If you haven’t had any traffic tickets for three years, only vision tests are required. If you have had tickets, vision and written sign tests are mandatory, and your new license will be good for only four years.

If you want to keep your out-of-state license, you may get a driver license that is valid only within Florida.
